Doing nothing used to be a perfectly respectable activity. There was no app for it, no measurable outcome, and no reason to announce that you were entering your intentional rest era.
Now rest requires preparation. A candle. A playlist. A small stack of books about why you are resting incorrectly. Before you can sit down, you must apparently become the creative director of sitting down.
The trouble with optimizing every corner of life is that eventually there are no corners left to hide in. Even a quiet afternoon gets a performance review. Did you feel restored? Did you journal? Did you hydrate with conviction?
Here is a modest proposal: let a spare hour be spare. Let a walk have no destination. Let a hobby remain something you are gloriously average at. Not everything needs a personal brand and a link in bio.
Perhaps the real luxury is not an immaculate routine. Perhaps it is an afternoon with absolutely nothing to show for itself. No lesson. No before-and-after. Just a pleasantly unproductive amount of time.
